It will help you display those nice dishes and utensils you just bought to every visitor. This article shall provide a step by step procedure on how to build a shelf for your kitchen.

Features of a Good Kitchen Shelf

A good kitchen shelf should have the following features:

  • Spacious
  • Should be in an open place for easier access
  • Materials used to build should be durable
  • Should be level

Before you embark on building your own shelf, you should first have the design of the type of shelf you want. These designs can be found on the websites or you can visit an expert to design it for you. The design of your cabinet will determine whether it should be a closed or open shelf. The following requirements will be necessary while building the shelves:

First, identify where you want the shelf located. This will depend on whether it is free hanging or one build on a wall. This procedure shall be for one on a wall.

Step 1: Measure and Mark the Wall

Using the tape measure and pencil, measure and mark the wall where you want to build your shelf. The model and plan of the design you have chosen should help you determine the lengths of the shelf. You should also clearly mark where the down supports of the shelves will be fixed.

Step 2: Measure and cut the Wood

Using the tape measure and pencil, take measurements of the wood. The lengths should correspond to those made on the wall. Mark these measurements using the pencil. This will make it easier to locate them while cutting the wood.

After measuring and marking the wood, take your table saw and carefully cut the wood. You should ensure that you do not cut outside the markings you made. This will ensure that the shelves fit accurately against the lengths marked on the wall. You can also smoothen the wood using a sandpaper.

Step 3: Measure and Cut Down Supports and Braces

Using the tape measure and pencil, measure the lengths of down supports of the shelves and cut them using the table saw. Also measure and cut 45-degree angle braces. The 45-angle degrees should be on the opposite sides of the braces at both ends. These will ensure that your shelves are level.

Step 4: Assemble the Support

Using the electric hammer drill set, drill through the down supports and the wall. Then use a screwdriver to fix it to the wall. Use the spirit level to make sure the support is level before fixing.

Step 5: Attach Shelves

Attach the shelves by screwing them onto the support using a screwdriver. After attaching the shelves, attach the angle braces. They should be fixed on both the down support and the shelf.

After fixing your shelf for your kitchen on the wall, you can paint it with the same color as that of your wall to make it not so visible against the wall or with a different color to make your shelves stand out.
